65 years in the U.S. and 40 years building Nissans in Tennessee
While Nissan is headquartered in Japan, the company sold its first automobile in the U.S. in 1958 and opened its Smyrna, Tennessee vehicle assembly plant way back in 1983! Over the past 40 years, the Smyrna plant has become one of the highest-volume vehicle assembly plants in North America, with a capacity of 640,000 vehicles annually. It has produced a total of over 14 million Nissans since its opening.
Currently the Smyrna plant produces these Nissan models:
- Leaf
- Maxima
- Murano
- Pathfinder
- Rogue
Opening in 2003, Nissan's Canton, Mississippi vehicle assembly plant has produced over 5 million Nissans!
The Canton plant produces:
- Altima
- Frontier
- Titan
- Titan XD
Beyond the vehicle assembly plants, Nissan also operates a factory producing millions of engines and transmissions in Decherd, Tennessee.
So, despite its Japanese origins, Nissan USA is firmly entrenched in the American South, employing many thousands of workers producing millions of vehicles made in the USA.
