Nissan Leaf: Zero Emissions

Nissan Leaf is a zero-emissions car*. It is 100% electric, not a hybrid or any other type of gas-powered vehicle. It burns zero gas and produces zero emissions. Nissan Leaf is engineered to perform like a V6. There is room for five passengers, and the Leaf has all the quality, reliability, and versatility Nissan customers expect.
  • Zero tailpipe emissions
  • 100% electric - no gas required
  • Competitively priced
  • Speeds up to 90 mph
  • 5 passengers, 5 doors
  • Advanced airbags, premium audio, Nissan navigation system, and more
*Refers to tailpipe emissions

Advanced Battery Technology, accessible charging network, and the car

Leaf is powered by a fully rechargeable lithium ion battery. Developed by Nissan, its breakthrough laminated design delivers twice the power and range of more conventional lithium ion batteries in a package that is half the size. A single charge will take Leaf up to 100 miles.

Nissan is partnering with communities, industry, and government to build the infrastructure of a network of convenient, practical charging stations to "fill up" the Nissan Leaf. So far, agreements have been reached with the State of Oregon, Sonoma County, the Tucson Metro area, San Diego, the Phoenix Metro area, the City of Seattle, Washington, DC, and Raleigh, NC, among others. The US Department of Energy has approved a $1.6 billion loan for Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) to modify its Smyrna, Tennessee, manufacturing plant to produce zero-emissions vehicles and the special battery packs to power them. (source: http://www.nissanusa.com/leaf-electric-car/news.jsp#/news) Until production is shifted to Smyrna in late 2012, the first vehicles for the US market will be built in Japan.

The modifications of the Smyrna manufacturing plant include a new battery plant and changes in the existing structure for electric-vehicle assembly. When fully operational, the vehicle assembly plant will have the capacity to build 150,000 zero-emissions vehicles a year and the new plant will have an annual capacity of 200,000 batteries.

Charging Equipment
In tandem with the purchase process, Nissan will offer personal charging docks, which operate on a 220-volt supply, as well as their installation. Nissan is providing these home-charging stations, which will be built and installed by AeroVironment, as part of a one-stop-shop process that includes a home assessment.
  • The average cost for the charging dock plus installation will be $2,200.
  • Charging dock and installation are eligible for a 50 percent federal tax credit up to $2,000.
  • Using current national electricity averages, Nissan LEAF will cost less than $3 to "fill up."
  • Nissan LEAF also will be the sole vehicle available as part of The EV Project, which is led by EV infrastructure provider eTec, a division of ECOtality, and will provide free home-charging stations and installation for up to 4,700 Nissan LEAF owners in those markets.
In North America, Nissan's operations include automotive design, engineering, consumer and corporate financing, sales and marketing, distribution and manufacturing. Nissan is dedicated to improving the environment under the Nissan Green Program 2010, whose key priorities are reducing CO2 emissions, cutting other emissions and increasing recycling.More information on Nissan in North America and the complete line of Nissan vehicles can be found online at www.NissanUSA.com.
